In 1933, as
Australia recovered from the Great Depression, two more stores were
opened, one in Canberra in the Civic Centre, the other in
Queanbeyan. In 1938, the Kingston store was
purchased.
The outbreak of World
War II in 1939 prompted a major strategic rethink, and all branches
outside of Canberra were closed down in anticipation of the hard
times to come.
It was not until the 1960s
that Canberra business began to prosper again, with the advent of
concerted spending by Federal Governments on the national
capital.
In 1976, a devastating fire necessitated the
demolition of the original Kingston store and the current Centre was
constructed on the site.
